Writing Your First Online Piece

Getting Over the Fear of Rejection

For many people, writing something and putting it online for people to see and read is a very daunting prospect. The thought of either someone reading your words and hating them, or worse, nobody reading them at all, is usually one of the main fears. However, my main thing to remember is that there are so many people who read tabloid crap every single day about boring things...so I’m sure there is at least someone out there who will read what you have to say.

I remember wanting to write my first blog. This was in the days when tumblr was the only place, really, that you could write about whatever you wanted without it being on your Myspace page. I didn’t share my tumblr with anyone I knew, so publishing my own writings about whatever I wanted wasn’t that scary for me. It was the thought of strangers reading my inner thoughts. It took me ages to get over this thought. I had to keep reminding myself that they were just strangers—if nobody I knew was going to read this then it didn’t matter, as I would never meet these strangers so they could only criticise me online. This was my next hurdle to jump through, as now I’d reminded myself that strangers might read it.

This is one of those scenarios, though, where the advice isn’t exactly majorly helpful, however perfect advice to give.

Just go for it.

After all, what is the worst thing that could happen? So what if nobody reads it? You’ve overcome one of your fears and put yourself out there. This is a major accomplishment and you should be proud, and if someone dislikes or hates your content...well, to each to their own. It doesn't mean nobody will like it, and if they vocalise their hate in a negative way...well, just remember: at least you aren’t as sad as them, having to bring people down.

So if you are reading this, you have already crossed the first hurdle...you have already decided you want to write something. So now what? Go on and do it!

First thing to do is pick a topic you know you won’t have any issues writing about. Something that doesn’t need to be forced, and something know feel passionate or rings true to you. This step is why so many people write journal-style posts for their first few. It’s much easier either writing about yourself to introduce yourself, or something that you have done/a hobby. These types of topics take no research and mean you can practice your writing skills without it taking up a lot of time and/or thought.

Next is to actually write. Most times, if you’re writing about something you know, the words will just come naturally and you will write paragraphs before you have even properly thought about writing. This means that proofreading is incredibly important. Because you find yourself spewing out words quickly, you might be slacking in the grammar and spelling departments. The last thing you want is for someone to pull you up on one of these things when it is your first post. It will give you unnecessary insecurities and mean your next post might take a while to pluck up the courage to write.

Once you have proofread, pictures are your next thought. It is a well known fact that people are drawn to articles or blogs if there are good quality and eye-catching photos. You can use stock photos, but if you want to write regularly, now is the time to start working on taking your own photos. The photos usually need to have something to do with what you’re writing about, but I have known people just use pictures of themselves, so it’s completely up to you which route you go down. Personally, I prefer topic-related photos.

Once you have completed all these steps, last thing is to give your post one last once over, just to ensure you have said everything you wish to—your spelling and grammar is correct and you are happy with your photos and placement.

Now it’s time for you to publish your first post!
