Why I Wanted to Join Vocal

The Beginning

My name is Deana, and I am currently a sophomore in college studying Special Education Moderate PreK-8. I was scrolling through Instagram one day when I came across an advertisement for Vocal. The ad was advocating for creators and providing them with a platform to write, and it immediately sparked my interest. I have been writing for fun since I was in elementary school, and it has continued all the way into college. I consider myself a good writer, simply because I enjoy my own writing. It started innocent enough, writing fan fictions about One Direction or Justin Bieber, and then it became my way to escape from everyday life. Most recently, I have simply been writing in a journal to get out all of my thoughts and hopes to help my own anxiety. College is a stressful time, so having that kind of personal outlet is nice.

Being a aspiring teacher, writing and literacy will be a large part of my day-to-day activities. I would love to share with my students my love for reading and writing, and pass the love onto them. Currently, I am doing pre-practicum work in a first grade classroom and it has been extremely rewarding. Having the opportunity to be in a classroom at such an early stage of my studies has helped me immensely by learning through experience. Being able to watch a professional in my field implement practices I have been learning about in class successfully just proves to me that I can really do it. Recently, I have been able to create my own lesson plan for a read aloud which I will be implementing with a small group of first graders, something I am both nervous and excited for. It is going to be my first "real teacher" experience.

I am hoping Vocal will allow me to turn my interest in writing and education into something even greater. No one has ever read my work, so this will be something new for me to try. I am also hoping that this can be a new escape for me; reading and writing articles from and for other writers as passionate as I. Writing is not something I will be able to do for a career—I am dedicated to my passion for teaching, but it is something I can do for fun in the meantime. I wish a career in writing was as achievable as teaching, because I would love to try it out and allow my creativity to take over for a bit. For me, teaching is a much more attainable goal that is intrinsically motivating, and will keep me passionate for years to come.

I am ready to dedicate myself to writing, as well as my studies, for this new chapter of my life. I want to be able to express myself through writing articles I truly care about, whether it pertains to politics, animals, beauty, or my day to day life. All I have been writing lately is essays upon essays for my classes, and it is getting very tiring and repetitive. I am using the same format and writing about a lot of the same things, so Vocal will give me a way to write about what I want, when I want and share it with more than just my professors. I see myself writing many pieces about my experiences with education going forward in my studies in career. I feel like I have a lot of useful information that can be shared, and experiences that may help others in their own lives. Additionally, I would love to write about other interests of mine such as activism, television, books, animals, and beauty. Overall, this will be a new experience for me, and I am very excited to begin.
