What More Is There?

It is that lingering question.

What is this life really about? For some, it is love. For some, it is a job. It could be many other things. But is that all? Most of us grow up in school for the first part of our lives, until we graduate high school. The people who choose college are there for at least four years. We graduate to get a job, and we work under people for rest of our short lives. Some of us make plenty through our hard work, and others barely make a living based upon their standards.

Is that really it, though? Are we really just meant to go to school and work for the rest of our lives? Work day and in and day out to retire and hope that you have enough retirement savings. I've deemed that as the norm of society. I have wondered this since I was in high school. Our parents and elders force this notion onto us, without giving any alternatives. I have an entrepreneur mindset, one that doesn't wish to work under others. But because I feel that way, I am labeled a "lazy millennial."

This way of living, this norm, is that of a prison. Our lives, at that point, are not in our control. We are forced to live a life that we don't wish to live. We are told just to accept it, that life is just that way. Those who wish to follow a different path are caged in by this norm, whether it be criticism from those close to you or the intimidation of society itself. We wish to make something of ourselves, but we wish to do it our own way, not following the norm. Finances and security are so necessary, that it forces us into this prison. Some of us are trapped in this norm because of certain circumstances.

Some may desire to be famous, others wish to travel, some are too afraid to step out, and some wish to follow the path that makes them happy, no matter the consequences that ensue. Our lives are not ours, but they can be taken back. Society's norm is not inescapable. You just have to decide what is most important to you. Some are fine existing in the norm, and some wish to exist outside of it. Is there more to this life than the norm? What's the point of living if we only live as prisoners? It's never too late to start that journey.
