Distractions are everywhere. You’re never going to be able to truly escape from them. They’re lurking around every corner, waiting to kill our productivity.

I am constantly being distracted! By Facebook, YouTube, Netflix; I could go on for hours! With all of these distractions everywhere, what can we do to remove them? How can we stay focused?

1. Clear your computer

I had no motivation when I sat down to write yesterday, so instead of getting up to clear my head, I started playing a game on my computer. And an hour later I finally returned to my work.

Having games on my laptop was my biggest mistake. I don’t have a dedicated work laptop so I just use my personal one but having both personal and work programs on the one device is a mistake.

If you work from home, it's always a good practice to be able to keep your work separate from your home life. The same goes with devices. Instead of being distracted during work time or working during family time, you will find a good balance between the two by keeping them separate.

To fix this issue, I moved all of my unnecessary games and movies from my computer onto a portable hard drive. Then I could separate work from leisure.

The availability of distractions was my downfall.

2. Purge your distractions

Sometimes all you need to do is get everything out of your system. Go for a walk, binge some Netflix, scroll through Facebook. Just know when enough’s enough. Once you’ve gotten everything that you think will distract you out of your system, then sit down and try working again.

This doesn't always work but for some people it might. It might be just what you need to break your craving for distractions and get some serious work done.

This isn’t always the best method and sometimes it can be counter-productive but if it works, then it’s a good method to me.

3. Turn the internet off

Sometimes the best thing to do is to just turn the internet off and go off the grid for a while. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and other sites are always going to be a constant distraction. They might also be really great tools for work but sometimes we need to separate ourselves from the internet for a while.

A big part of our lives surround the internet and sometimes we need to turn it off to be able to focus on our immediate tasks. One method I use is to load all of your needed web pages and then turn the Wi-Fi on your computer off. This way you still get all of your needed information from the internet and you can also remove distractions of other sites.

Distractions are everywhere. You can never truly remove distractions and be rid of them but you can learn to live with them and separate yourself from them when needed. Your work ethic is something that keeps on changing; you have different challenges to face each day. All you need to do is learn to adapt to the distractions around you.
