Retirement age is defined as above 65 years old. Almost all of us find it hard to accept the fact that the retirement age is the final stage of human life.
Getting old is inevitable and we cannot change that reality. It is always accompanied by a fear of being alone, lonely, sickly, physically invalid, penniless, and homeless. Instead of living with anxiety about it, let us reverse that fear and let us prepare for it calmly.
Retirement should be a happy time because you can finally make your own schedule. You can take long vacations and travel to the places you dreamed of. You can start spending your retirement money.
Working in a government office was my choice because of the retirement benefits it offered.
I loved my job with all my heart and soul. I thought that retirement life would be a lonesome journey. I had to cope up with the daily schedule for 25 years.
Monday to Friday schedule
- 4:30 AM - wake up time and prepare for work
- 5:00 AM - breakfast
- 5:30 AM - ride the bus for office
- 7:00 AM - call time in the office
- 8:00 PM - arrive home from the office
From Mondays to Fridays, I had to be well-poised and fully dressed for the office.
Saturdays and holidays were frequently an overtime work. Sundays were the only vacation time that I had.
Mondays were my most hated days.
Aside from the above daily schedule, I was raising four children. I thank God that they grew up well and did not give me headaches in spite of the lack of mother’s attention. It was my husband who did my duties for my children. They have all settled down now and have their own careers to attend to.
My job description: After having been promoted to a higher position, the last 10 years of my job became even more demanding. Every time that there were important events in the office, I was always given tough assignments that required more hours of work. I was always required to attend important training, workshops, and conferences out of town. Normally, there were deadlines for submission of various reports required in a government office. Being a signatory for the various requests for public documents, I had to stay foot in my office for whole days.
Retirement life gives you a chance to do the things you have always wanted to do. I worked for 25 years in a government office with loyalty and dedication and I don’t feel any regrets about it. I loved my job very much, but the feeling of freedom from all kinds of stress and anxiety is heavenly. I am now enjoying a beautiful retirement life.
Things that I enjoy at present:
- I meditate a lot.
- I sleep for eight hours without alarms.
- I stay in bed from sun up to sun down, if I want to.
- I wake up late.
- I drink coffee and eat breakfast in my own sweet time.
- I travel to the places I dreamed of.
- I can go out even if I am not poised and well dressed.
- I love being with my loved ones, especially with my children and grandchildren.
- I love being with my friends.
- I have plenty of time for gardening.
- I write articles for publication.
- I can watch free movies if I want to.
We should make a retirement goal at the age of 45 or 50. We should start making financial and health plans for our retirement age.
Financial security and good health are the most important elements for a happy retirement. On the financial aspect, the retirement plan can be done through bank savings, pension plan, or life insurance. On the health aspect, make sure that you take good care of yourself by eating the right foods, taking your maintenance medicines religiously, taking food supplements, and doing simple exercises.
Those who have regular employment and income are more financially secure in their retirement age because they already have retirement schemes like monthly pension from the government starting at the age of 60 up to 65.
In summary, retirement is something we deserve after we have served faithfully and after we have fulfilled our dreams and aspirations. Retirement gives us time to move on to a peaceful, quiet, and beautiful life.
