My Podcast Journey
Two years ago, nearly to the day, I began a story about a man walking his dog. Some of you had read it; The Trees Swallow People. Over the next two years, I continued to expand a short story into a 45K horror story about mania, depression, cults, supernatural trees, and a little Yorkie called Diva. Now, not only is it available to read in its entirety, it's a published podcast series on Spotify and audio-book on Audible. You can go to Spotify, Youtube, or any good podcast platform and listen to all 6 hours, across 24 episodes, for free.
Conor MatthewsPublished 4 months ago in JournalUnmasking The Root Cause of Manager-Staff Discontent
According to a popular handbook for managers written years ago, a good manager motivates others by "encouraging ambition, the desire to achieve, and a wish to contribute to the collective good of the business". This was followed by a list of qualities regarded as important to this role (like being decisive, setting high standards and defining responsibility). No doubt, those are useful pre-requisites for leading and engaging others, but concentrating on just those qualities assume that all managers start from the same point with the same perspectives. Unfortunately, they don't, for a simple but crucial reason.

Introduction Yes, I am a strategic management professor who is “of a certain age.” So, sometimes my reference points can be a bit dated, no matter how hard I strive to keep up with the times. In conversations with students, colleagues, and clients, I know that I’m going to miss some references and not quite “get” what is so funny - or alternatively - horrible about a story, an advertisement, a social media post, etc. And at the same time, I know that some of my references from my youth, young adulthood, and now, even my parenthood days won’t resonate with today’s students who were born after September 11th and consulting clients who may not have been alive to see the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Just a couple of weeks ago, my husband and I didn't know how we were going to pay all of our bills. We were in a situation where we were trying to figure out what bills we could put off, or what we could sell in the house to make a couple of extra bucks to pay something. I was trying to take out a loan, but I only work part time, so I couldn't get approved for any. On top of that, my student loans are unfrozen, so that's another bill that was added. Needless to say, I've had a couple meltdowns thinking/talking about our finances. I wasn't sleeping, and all I could think about during the day was what I could do to make some money so that we could survive.
