Staying Strong

The Terrible Experience That Is Job Hunting

I graduate in a few days. I am trying to be a teacher, I've been in the school for awhile now to be a teacher, and just like any other soon-to-be graduate, I am trying to get a job in my field. I've been applying. And applying and applying and applying. I've sent emails and made phone calls. I've had two interviews out of the six jobs I've applied to for teaching in my field. Out of the six of those I applied to, four have ended up in denials. None of my interviews panned out at all.

Why?

Because I don't have enough experience teaching for them to really consider me. I'm new to the field. I'm TOO new to the field for them to consider me as a candidate.

How ridiculous is that? I am trying to enter the field. I just finished my education, which means that I am trained in the newest, latest, and greatest in teaching theory. I am new, which means I am trainable. I don't really have any bad habits.

But because I only have about a year under my belt teaching, I am not chosen for the job. I am not worthy or ready to be a teacher yet—because I don't have enough experience. But how do I get the experience?

I'm sure a lot of other 22-year-olds relate to my experience in entering the workforce fresh out of university. Anyone who's woken up to an email letting us know that we were not chosen for the job understands the blow it takes to your confidence. Four out of six times so far I haven't gotten the job. The other two? Who knows yet because I only just applied the other day, and they are waiting for more applicants. I lose out to those with more experience. I lose out to those who speak Spanish, despite being bilingual in the language I am wanting to teach.

It's tiring, it's frustrating, and it's hard to keep going and keep trying. You feel like you aren't good enough for things that aren't your fault. So how do you stay strong?

What helps me is to keep in mind that I will come to the right job for me. In my case, I will find the right school for me that will help me grow into a better teacher. I will find the school that will give me the students I need and the students who need me.

For you, it may be something else. You will find that marketing job, you will land that acting gig, you will be accepted into a news company to write the next big piece, you will be published. It is just not our time just yet. And that's hard. Some days it feels impossible to think that way. But we've come this far and we have gone through too much school, training, and studying to give up on the job we want.

Let's make our way. Let's change the field for the better, then when we are the ones making the decisions, we'll keep this in mind when choosing all our new employees and coworkers. We will make it, and we will end up exactly where we are supposed to be. We just have to keep trying, keep applying, and keep interviewing. Let's market ourselves as the new and improved amazing new employees we can be.

Because we are amazing. And we are worth it.
