How Giving the "Silent Treatment" Can Work Against You

Always stay true and be vocal about what you want, it's what makes you who you are.

I made a big move from my hometown Monroe, NY all the way to Las Vegas, NV in hopes to find a brand-new beginning. Since then, I spent months without a job.

I figured the time apart from working constant hours would help me figure out what I truly wanted to accomplish in life. So, I took that time to really analyze and speak with individuals who were certain in the path they wanted to take in their career. Now I know what you’re thinking… how can learning about other people’s passions in life help my journey? Here's the thing, it just did.

After talking to people from New York and Vegas, I realized this... people were just more vocal about what they wanted here in Las Vegas. As growing entrepreneurs, we're always taught to "hustle in silence"—but I think that phrase is interpreted incorrectly.

To hustle in silence doesn't necessarily mean to not talk about your aspirations in life. “Who are we hiding them from?” That's what I came to realize.

The phrase comes from sharing your dreams with those that have a negative or less caring attitude about your visions, but still caring about theirs. "They want to see you do well, but never better than them."

As time goes on, we as young and growing entrepreneurs have to refrain from such a mentality of worrying so much about giving the negative party the attention and giving the positive crowd the time of day.

Sometimes you may be hurting your own opportunities by staying silent. There are more people in this world wanting to help you with whatever opportunities you have in mind; the trick is to talk about them, and I don't mean talk about them with just anyone, know who to speak about them with. Someone who can help you see things clear... someone who may help you out financially if that's what it takes. You'll never know who may take you up on your dream one day.

We are afraid to make connections in the business world with people just because we're fearful of our ideas getting taken. Like in movies where the bad guy in the workplace takes all the credit, but it was the other guy's idea. Sometimes in those situations, it's best to speak up and take ownership about your shit because no one else will ever know.

In the end of it all, I realized where was I going in my career and what path I wanted to take... (this was the whole point to this) to have a better understanding, you'll have to see it for yourself. What I learned is that fear will always be there, no matter what route you take with your passions. Whether it's to be an artist, a doctor, or even selling books online. Your passion starts with a positive attitude. You can do this!

I always wanted to live my life as fearless as those that became successful, and now I'm seeing for myself it's not so scary once you know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life. Just do it.

There's a saying that goes, "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." Well, that's 100 percent true. Some may argue that you'll never be that happy with anything you do, things will come up, and you'll eventually hate it... of course, there's going to be components to your everyday hustle that you'll find more annoying than other things, but not enough to break you from being happy about what you're doing. There are people out there, happy in what they do on a daily basis... it's the ones that give up on every little bit of frustration that comes their way that never accomplish their goals. It's learning how to be content when things that come along, and being grateful for the opportunity you have and the person you are becoming. It's about not giving up and doing it the right way. Life is not a one time thing... opportunities are hard work and it takes a while to mold your path. Not all of us can win the lotto... and even that sometimes doesn't make people happy. Love what you do!

Always stay true and be vocal about what you want, it's what makes you who you are.
