Guide to Getting That Promotion

What Key Skills and Qualities Are Going to Help You Reach Your Career Goals at Any Level

I started writing this as one of the parts of my job is to help train and develop my team to enable them to take my place when I inevitably move on into another role, and I noticed that I keep coming back to the same 4 points that they need to have and develop in order to succeed.

1. Passion

A passion for what you do or what to achieve is critical in progressing in any career sector. It may seem like an obvious one but when was the last time you stopped to think about the "why" in what you do? Do you want a new car? New house? Better Christmas for the family? Putting this into perspective helps you focus your time more clearly and builds on your passions to succeed.

Similarly, why do you enjoy your current job role and what drives you to get up in the morning? If you don't have the passion, then perhaps it's time to explore a career change.

2. Reliability

This is a must for those considering progression. People need to know they can depend on you to get the job done even if others may let you down. Take charge to ensure timescales and quality standards are met in all aspects of your current role. This will put you in great standing for taking on new opportunities when they arise.

On the back of this, it's also important to manage your team's/managers' expectations. Don't take on too much if you can't manage, explain to them what your workload is currently and have that open and honest conversation with them around when it's achievable to get the job finished.

All managers would prefer this conversation at the start of a task/project than just before the deadline.

3. Resilliance

Let me be very honest with you, you will make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, particularly when you are trying to step into a new role but it's how you bounce back from it that shows the nature of your character and will earn you more respect.

A mistake is only a mistake if you learn nothing from it.

4. Be relentless.

When you are asking your managers, peers, or wider teams for support they will undoubtably give you excuses "not the best time" or "I'm busy at the moment, come back later" as they have their own workload to contend with and in some case even their own progression. You need to persevere.

Nobody in any job will ever give you everything you want straight away. Be relentless, ask for their time, skills and anything you need. Ask and ask until you feel like you are getting on your own nerves with it, then ask some more; this is the only way that you can guarantee to get what you want

In Conclusion

These are obviously not the only skills you will need to succeed but are, in my opinion, some of the more important ones. If you enjoy this sort of content then please share it to show your support and I will make more content like this.

Thanks all and have a great day!
