A Starving Artist Pt. 2

As promised, week 2!

Three separate pieces from one sketch.

As promised, I am back for week number two!! This week has been painfully long, news both ugly and uglier, and drama that would make KKW herself blush! But through it all, I'm still here, and I'm still your friendly starving artist!

Let's take a look at my progress and talk a little about what I used to create these drawings, physically and mentally.

No Face

This is an exaggeration, and I am not promoting an unhealthy body Ideal.

I have created two pieces of art this week, both are of pretty graphic nature, but as I mentioned last week, these are my experiences, uncensored and real. The original plan for this was to remodel the three wise monkeys and show my own interpretation of the phrase. As you can see, it ended up being a slight Frankenstein of all three macaques, as well as some hidden emotion to do with body image and self-doubt.

Who?

This is an exaggeration, and I am not promoting an unhealthy body Ideal.

As you can see in the cover photo, I played around with this image a lot, being the fresh little newbie that I am. I still haven't found the perfect style for me. Although, I know the pinch of talent is there, I am not entirely confident with what I am creating. For the majority of my drawings, I use Photoshop and a Wacom Intuos tablet. If you want to start using a computer to create art, but like me have limited funds, then fear not! I honestly learned to draw like this using a trackpad and Microsoft Paint (as well as pencil and paper of course).

Strangely enough, the question I get asked most often is "Why don't you sell your art already?" Here's why:

The most important thing to any beginner artist is loyal customers, people who support you and the work you create. "So? you can draw, stick it on Facebook and make some money!" It's really not that simple to anyone wondering. My kind of art isn't personalized or made to order, the best thing I can do is make sure I'm posting my art as efficiently and safely as I possibly can. When you have 0 pounds and 0 pence, this can be very difficult to do. The best way for me to attract a customer isn't just by the art itself, but by the customer reviews. Here's an example. Imagine ordering a new pair of boots, perfect size, style, and color, but when you receive them, the postal service has rough and tumbled the package and only one shoe has arrived. The only person to blame in this situation is, in fact, the seller. If they had proper packaging, the shoes could have been eaten and pooped out by a rhino and you would still have received them both, in mint condition! This is exactly what I aim to do before attempting to get a bad online presence before I've even made a penny or two.

In conclusion, this week I did, in fact, complete the task I set myself, although I can't actually sell anything I create (yet). It doesn't mean that this isn't the start of my painstakingly time-consuming journey into being self-employed.

My task for next week is to get out of my comfort zone with art. The thing I hate drawing the most is hair. I can never seem to get it right, nor can I get the beautiful silky locks that most artists can achieve with the flick of the wrist. So I am setting myself the goal to draw the hairiest of beasts and animals I possibly can, both improving my skill as an artist, and showing all of you exactly what I can do!

As always, thank you for reading this blog, I'm going to aim to create at least one entry every week (more, if I have something I feel should be written down) and as I am completely in the dark here as a beginner, a share (or 20) would be amazing! The more people reading these blogs ,the more chance I have of actually getting somewhere with my art, eventually outgrowing my "starving artist" status!
